Parenting Series: Addiction and Hope with Andrew Jurek

In Part 2 of our discussions on addiction, Andrew Jurek explains his experience, which was partly detailed in his mother Deborah’s book High. Last week, Deborah spoke of her perspective as a parent of a young person struggling with addiction, and Andrew is here to share how he felt in his most challenging moments and lessons learned along the way. He explains what goes through the mind of someone unable to control their addiction and how it can happen to anyone. His advice: nix the “not my child” philosophy. Andrew believes there's not always a way to prevent a young person from going down this path, but opening the lines of communication early within families is the key to helping those struggling know they are not alone. We thank Andrew and Deborah for sharing their stories and especially for continuing to seek to help others facing similar circumstances and fight stigmas.

Karen reflects on addiction she’s seen in her family members' lives and how it doesn’t have to define you.
